Space Exploration

In Ed's Space Exploration lectures, he reviews the Past, Present and Future of Space Exploration. Private industry is now taking over from government managed programs. The US is finally launching our Astronauts to the International Space Station using USA space vendors rather than paying the Russians for rides. It is an exciting time for Space Exploration. China is becoming a strong competitor and challenging NASA for Space Exploration leadership.

Past

Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space successfully completing one orbit of Earth on April 12, 1961. Gagarin and Russia beat Alan Shepard and the USA's first sub orbital flight in 1961 in the Freedom 7 spacecraft aboard a Mercury-Redstone rocket by about three weeks. Ed revisits the ups and downs of the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Space Shuttle programs as well as NASA's new mission Artemis which will be returning Astronauts to the Moon including the first woman.

Present

Ed discusses the international space station and how private industry is entering the space exploration segment. After the Space Shuttle program was ended on August 31, 2011, with the last mission flown by the Atlantis Space Shuttle which now resides at Kennedy Space Center, private industry is becoming very active in the pursuit of Space Exploration. Kennedy Space Center is enjoying a rebirth of Space Exploration.
